"Contrology (Pilates) develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit."
—Joseph Pilates, 1945
Julie M. Goin
Julie Marie Goin comes to Utah after years of traveling and teaching around the country. A native of upstate New York, Julie holds both a BFA in Dance Performance/Choreography and an MA in Dance Education from SUNY Brockport, and is a classically trained Pilates Instructor.
Following graduate school, Julie moved to Martha's Vineyard, MA to help 2 fellow dance colleagues create a professional modern dance company, She-figured Dance. Julie danced professionally and traveled with She-figured Dance for 5 years, and was an integral part of the business end of the company.
While living on Martha's Vineyard, Julie began training to become a certified Pilates instructor. While Julie struggled to continue dancing with ankle and rotator cuff injuries, she found that Pilates was the only form of exercise that could strengthen and support those areas while avoiding pain and further injury. She was ecstatic to find a profession that would keep her active and conditioned, while helping others also achieve similar goals.
Julie received her comprehensive teacher training from Stefan Knight, a graduate of The Pilates Center of Boulder, CO, and certified Rolfer. The training program included a rigorous 780 hours of observation of certified instructors, participation in 4 weekend lecture workshops, training in anatomy, kinesiology, pedagogy, imagery, and classic Pilates philosophy, personal workouts in a fully equipt studio, and private lessons from certified instructors.
In addition to working along side her mentors, Stefan Knight and Ben Basar at the Vineyard Pilates Center, she has worked in health clubs, country clubs, yoga studios, and private Pilates studios in New York, Massachusetts and Utah. She also had the honor to teach Pilates in the Department of Dance at her alma mater, SUNY Brockport. Julie has been a certified member of the Pilates Method Alliance since 2005, and continues to further her education through workshops and seminars across the country each year.
Julie's personal mission statement: "To utilize my lifelong education in movement and the human body to educate clients about taking charge of their bodies, the benefits of classic Pilates, and to promote health and pain-free living."
